Turkey is a country with a long history. In the thirteenth century Turkey was actually called the Ottoman Empire. With the rise and expansion of Western colonial powers, the huge Ottoman Empire gradually declined and became the object of competition and division by Western powers. The history of Turkey as a national state began only with the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in 1918. There are eight important events in the twentieth century that took place in Turkey.
